Dembele’s current deal with the Spanish outfit expires at the end of the season, but the club are looking to keep him amid his links with Premier League clubs.
A number of reports in Spain claim talks between the two clubs are ongoing but that they are nowhere near finding an agreement on the extension.
Journalist Florian Plettenberg, as cited by the Daily Mail, reports that the 2018 World Cup winner is demanding around £700 000 (R14 million) a week and that it has left Xavi almost speechless.
Barcelona are still trying to lower their wage bill in order to register new signing Ferran Torres, so it remains to be seen if the club will agree to Dembele’s reported demands.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta stated a few weeks ago that the club’s very keen to keep Dembele, who he feels is better than Kylian Mbappe.
“We have a very good relationship with Dembele and he wants to stay,” Laporta told TV3.
“We also want him to stay because he’s a great player.
“These situations need negotiations with representatives who want the best for the player.
“I’m enthusiastic about Dembele. He’s a better player than Mbappe.”
